Burial in a cemetery plot, with its long-standing and familiar traditions, is a process that many find comforting.  In recent years and for a variety of reasons, people have become interested in cremation.  Cremation places the ashes of the deceased in an urn.  Urns can be buried in a traditional grave or kept above ground in a structure called a columbarium which contains individual compartments call "niches."  Oak Hill Cemetery offers both graves and niche options.

When considering whether to purchase a plot or columbarium niche, the choice comes down to your individual beliefs personal,  preferences and practical considerations.  Both options are a meaningful way to remember a loved one.

You may have noticed our columbarium as it sits to the left of the shed near the front gate.  Ours is made of granite and concrete with individual compartments (niches) of 12" x 12" x 12" that can hold up to two urns.

There are many factors that may influence your final decision.  Often the preference to be closer to family members favors in-ground burial or the preference to be above ground favors a columbarium niche.  A grave can hold a casket plus one urn or simply two urns.  A  niche holds two urns.

Either option requires memorialization of the individual(s) resting there.  Purchase of a traditional headstone is handled directly by the family.  Urns placed in niches will display an orderly, set style of memorialization on each granite plaque.  This memorialization is handled through the Cemetery with a monument company.

You may also prefer pre-planning for yourself where you can decide to purchase either a grave or niche.

Whatever you decide the Oak HiIl Cemetery offers a peaceful place where one  can lay to rest, visit and memorialize a loved one.
